L'un des principaux objectifs de l'arthroplastie totale de genou (ATG) est d'obtenir un genou stable et bien équilibré avec un membre inférieur dans un alignement neutre.
Le travail mis en oeuvre pour obtenir de meilleurs résultats fonctionnels et une cinématique plus naturelle du genou après ATG, a conduit à un renouveau d'intérêt envers d'autres techniques chirurgicales. Elles reposent toutes sur l'attention d'un équilibrage ligamentaire plus naturel, utilisant davantage des cibles d'alignement spécifiques au patient.
