We evaluated the potential for rehabilitation of the paralysed arm through the use of automatic reaching movements. We took advantage of the fact that automatic movement reactions are elicited when reach targets change position during the movement. We compared motor performance in a group of patients using this task (AUTO group) to a second group that trained using static targets (CONTROL group). The results showed an improvement in motor performance (i.e.increase in Fugl-Meyer score) for the AUTO group, but not for the CONTROL group. Thus, we show that the use of automatic motor reactions is effective in the rehabilitation of the paralysed arm and can complement current rehabilitation techniques.
