In France, knee osteoarthritis affects 10 million people. Risk factors are obesity, poor limb alignment, chronic knee instability, weak quadriceps and generalized arthritis. The progression of knee osteoarthritis is di cult to predict. Management involves a combination of pharmacological and non pharmacological treatments such as patient education, regular exercise, use of walking aids and weight loss. Paracetamol is the first line of treatment. Non steroidal anti-inflammatories are used if paracetamol has no effect. Slow acting anti-arthritis medications can be used when other treatment is insuficient. Intra-articular injections of hyaluronic acid can be useful. A local corticosteroid injection is indicated when there is an inflammatory exacerbation with intra-articular effusion.
