DIAPHRAGM :
The great forgotten maxillofacial rehabilitation
The diaphragm is a muscle that separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity. Being the main inspiratory muscle, it plays a crucial role in the ventilation process. Therefor its role in the phonation process seems just as obvious and essential. It is crossed by one of the main organs of the digestive tract, namely the esophagus, which suggests that its activity may have to be taken into account in the swallowing process.
Finally, due to its anatomical joints on the vertebrae and the ribs, and because of its close proximity with the ligamentous bands of the digestive tract, we can safely assume it equally plays an important role in the posture of the spinal cord which itself plays a role in the posture of your cervical spine, hence its fundamental role in maxillofacial rehabilitation. Yet in the various descriptions of the rehabilitation of the maxillofacial region, we rarely read about this hinge muscle of the human body in upright posture. Research articles and studies, however, confirm these elements. It therefore seems essential to include diaphragmatic rehabilitation into maxillofacial rehabilitation.
