Dysfunction of the masticatory system among seniors: a case-control study
A good part of the population complains about TMD (Temporo-mandibular dysfunction). These complaints decrease with age and the elderly have virtually no complaints at all. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the absence of TMD complains is correlated to an absence of dysfunction. In this epidemiological study data was collected from patients, over 65 years old, and compared to a control group?: Medical history was recorded from direct questionnary and from medical ÿ les. TMD presence was evaluated using the «?Helkimo index?». In this study TMD prevalence did not change with age. However, a distinct difference of lingual kinetic was observed in these elderly, particularly for coordination and dissociation of tongue movements. In conclusion, prevalence of TMD is not modified by age, contrary to dysfunction of lingual kinetic wich has a direct impact on swallowing.
